If you watch food blogging YouTube videos or food shows on Vancouver and Richmond, one of the places you see time and time again is HK BBQ Master. I love Cantonese style BBQ as much as anyone so this place had to be my first stop when I landed in Richmond. I thought I was being smart going at 3pm but nope, still a line and a half hour wait. While I was in line I had already plotted my perfect 2 item dish: BBQ Pork & Roast Pork. By the time our number was called and we were seated, I was hungry and ready to order. The space was your very typical HK restaurant with lots of busy people rushing around and diners sharing tables. I told the waitress the dream combo I wanted and she replied with a virtual slap in the face: "Sorry, no more BBQ Pork." I think she saw a tear in my eye but I promise it was just very hot in there. Feeling very defeated I opted instead for just roast pork and listened to the other tables receiving the same rejection notices. Honestly I wish they had mentioned it before seating people as I could tell, most people had come for the BBQ Pork. But I think they sorta purposely "overlook" it since they know that once seated, we would just relent and order something else. But anyway, the variety of meats we did order were very good. Can't say it's the best I have had but across the board it was very very good. And then the twist came. At the end when we were finishing up, we overheard a waitress tell an acquaintance, who was seated at a nearby table, that some BBQ Pork just finished cooking. So I flagged down another waitress and asked her if that was true and she looked at me and then at the kitchen as if I had just divulged the recipe for Coke. She sheepishly confirmed the news and I ordered a side of it which turned out to be a whole platter. Despite being stuffed, the BBQ pork was indeed very delicious and it made me think how perfect my combo would have been if I was able to get it from the start. I could only eat a few pieces at this point but don't worry, it didn't go to waste. We packed it to go and I ate it later on in the middle of the Richmond Night Market and it was honestly better than anything that was offered there.

Sunday brunch-time we showed up around 10:30 to our originally-on-the-schedule dimsum restaurant only to find out that they are reservation only. HK BBQ Master was on our list for a different day but was pretty close by, opening soon, and easily swapped in for a future reservation at the other place, so our family of 7 piled into the rental car and drove over to downtown Richmond in the hopes of trying some delicious charsiu. As noobs we definitely did not realize that the dine-in line was separate from the take-out line, and an exasperated Cantonese auntie waved us to the right entrance after we waited in the wrong line for 5 minutes or so. Luckily we were able to put our names down first on the clipboard at the appropriate entrance and right at 11AM (when the place opens) we were led inside the small dining room. We wanted to try a little bit of everything, so we ordered 4 heaping bowls of rice, 4 bowls of soup, 1 order of greens, and legit every meat plate they had on the menu: #1 honey bbq pork (charsiu, we asked for fatty cut), #2 crispy roasted pork belly, #3 famous bbq duck, #5 soya chicken, #6 sauteed free range chicken (basically scallion chicken, served cold), and #7 bbq spare ribs (more traditional charsiu that we're used to). By far my favorite was the #1 honey bbq pork. Some others at our table found the fatty cut a little too fatty but it was perfect to me, so tender and flavorful and actually not too sweet, which is sometimes my complaint with the HK-style BBQ that I can get closer to home. Eating that honey pork was totally a revelation for me and I'll be searching for charsiu to match that level from now on :') Also excellent was the cold scallion chicken and the famous bbq duck - both were super flavorful, super moist, and on point. The soya chicken was just okay; a bit bland and dry, and the crispy roasted pork belly was good but not so elevated that I felt like I couldn't get something similar in quality and flavor in Texas. Same with the BBQ spare ribs, which tasted like the charsiu I'm more familiar with getting at home. The rice bowls were huge, our party of 7 had more than enough with 4 orders. And the soup was also really delicious; there was a bit of a sweet element to it that my MIL loved. We ordered right at open and all our food was out on the table in 5 minutes; we were in and out of the dining room within 40 minutes and on to our next vacation destination. Cash only so remember to bring some to pay, whether you're dining in or taking out. By the time we left there was a line to eat in so highly recommend coming early if you don't want to wait.

Heard a lot about the meats here so had to try it. Already had lunch so stopped by to get a half order of roast duck, which was delicious! Meaty, juicy, tender, and rich in flavor. To go line could get long, luckily we got here at a down time and it wasn't too long. They have a seating area but it's not too large, and it looks to be always busy for sit down dining. Note that the entrance is inside the parking garage. There's no entrance in the street side - you'll see the restaurant but the entrance is inside the parking garage. And CASH ONLY! Be prepared. Saw one group walk away because no one had cash.

My family stopped here for dinner on July 23, 2024 after coming back from our ferry ride from Victoria back to Vancouver. There was a wait, but it wasn't too long. The interior of the restaurant was cozy and compact with tables relatively close to each other. The food itself was not bad. My favorite dish was the green onion oil chicken. The BBQ pork was also ok, but not the best I've ever had. Some pieces were too chewy. While we were seated, the restaurant staff began to announce certain items to be sold out. Luckily, we placed our order for the very last portion of roasted duck. While the food was decent, I wouldn't recommend this location if you do not like small/tight spaces. The food is the star here, and it's good enough to at least order for take out. Oh yeah, this place is CASH ONLY.
